Galaxies consist of huge systems comprising of stars, gas, dust, and dark matter under the force of gravity. They are some of the largest constructions in the universe and they are available in various shapes and sizes. The knowledge of the galaxy types aids the scientists to know more about how the universe was formed and evolved.
The spiral galaxy is one of the most prevalent ones. These galleries resemble their rotating disks and have spiral extents of their galaxies that run outward beginning in the center. The weapons would have young stars, gas, and dust, and the core area may have mature stars. The Milky Way or the galaxy that houses Earth is a spiral galaxy.
The other one is the elliptical galaxy. These are oval or spherical shaped galaxies that lack clear identifiable features such as spiral arms. They consist of the relatively old stars and little to no gas and dust hence new star formation is not as prevalent in these galaxies.
Another category is the irregular galaxies. There is no definite shape to these galaxies just as the name implies. They tend to be disorganized and could also have been affected by the gravitational interactions with other galaxies. Although they may have irregular shapes they can still harbor the high number of stars and active star formation regions.
There are also the lenticular galaxies which are regarded as a blend between the spiral and elliptical galaxies. They possess the central bulge and the disk, but do not have the noticeable spiral arms. These galaxies can be considered to be a transitional period of galaxy evolution.
Galaxies may be very different in size. There are those which have billions of stars whereas others might only have a few million. Clusters have the largest galaxies and are formed by more than one galaxy held by the process of gravity.
Study of galaxies aids scientists to comprehend the massive order of the universe. Telescopic and space missions observation gives important insights into the formation of galaxies, their interaction, and evolution.
In general, galaxies are essential elements of the universe and their diversity demonstrates diversity and beauty of the universe structures.
